Always heard friends talking about Pilates and how it helped them keep their bodies toned, but are unsure of how to get started with it? Well, you need not worry anymore because in this post we talk about all that you must know about before starting this whole body exercise regimen. Right from different pilate styles to picking the right exercise gear, we discuss it all in this post. Come, let’s read on.

Pilate Styles

There are different pilate styles and they all differ from each other in terms of their approach and areas of effectiveness. Some of the forms that are popular around the world are mat , clinical, group reformer, and classical pilates. To know more about each of these forms, read our next post “Types of Pilates you Must Know Before you Choose One“.

What to Wear

It’s advisable to wear a fitting top with a fitting pant for pilates. It will not just help you move freely, but will also help the instructor observe your movements. Do not wear any lose clothes, watch, jewelry or any other lose thing that might make you uncomfortable. For a tighter grip on the floor, wear socks or perform bare feet.

What Makes Pilates Different from Other Forms of Exercise

Unlike most other exercises where there is a risk of body injury due to weights or jerks, Pilates is relatively safer as its a jerk-free form of exercise. It is a core exercise that strengthens the back and increases the stamina. It uses the body as a whole, and is mostly about lying on the sides, back or kneeling on the floor. Another good thing about Pilates is that it helps ensure that the body works evenly and symmetrically, and that no side of the body works harder than the other.

Choosing a Pilates Instructor

To get the best results, it’s important that you work with a qualified Pilates instructor. Before you join a studio, go to the studio to see how they conduct their sessions. A good trainer is one who works out with their participants and keeps motivating them from time to time. To make sure you are hiring a good instructor, observe, whether or not the instructor is actively moving around to help the trainees maintain their form.

One Last Tip

Even if your Pilates studio has no restrictions on the number of classes you attend in a week or month, it’s advisable that you don’t hop into a class every day. Take at least one day off in a week to let your body recover from the weekly stress.
